It's been a pretty busy couple of weeks here in Adelaide. Anelle finished up work, I put in my notice, my sister is here visiting and in the middle of all that we are planning our travels now that we know Melbourne is not happening. A bit late o this post but have a look.
Two weeks ago Anelle and I got together with our friend Suren for a mini trip to this harbor town that many have recommended for a visit. Suren was kind enough to drive us to Victor Harbor, which is a small harbor town well known for its whale watching opportunities, famous little penguins, camel rides on the beach, a horse drawn tram and the nearby Granite Island. Unfortunately, whales do not begin to migrate through the area until the start of July. Just missed it!

We arrived in Victor Harbor after an hour long drive through picturesque vineyards and hills. We arrived around lunchtime and found a great spot for $10 fish n chips. Anytime I am near a beach, I feel like fish n chips are a must! It was a great choice and we left feeling pretty full. After lunch, we made our way towards the harbor and the other well-known attraction, which is the horse drawn tram. People can catch the horse drawn tram on the mainland and take it to Granite Island. We weren’t really sure if the horse was truly pulling all that weight on its own or if the tram was motorized. Either way, the horse didn’t look too happy, which made the decision to walk across the bridge an easy one.
Once on Granite Island, we took the Kaiki Walk, which takes you around the perimeter of the island. You get great views looking back at the mainland and of the open ocean. It’s a short and easy 1.5km walk that is worth experiencing. It has excellent lookouts along the way and the numerous trees and boulders you can climb. I’m hoping you all realize how much I love climbing stuff by now!
After completing the loop and making our way back to the mainland, we ducked in and out of a few of local shops. It was another great day with a friend while discovering a new area of South Australia. With so much to experience and see in South Australia, I am not sure I would recommend it unless you are spending a great amount of time nearby. Since Anelle and I have been here for almost seven months, we felt we needed to check it out. It’s a great little family town and I can imagine it being great for families in the summer time or when the whales are passing through. We were happy to check it out. After a little caffeine pick me up, I jumped behind the wheel and got us back to Adelaide.
