On Saturday morning Anelle met up with Russell in order to participate in some of his research at the University of South Australia. After spending a couple of hours there, she met up with Laura for lunch. While she was busy for most of the day, I hit the gym, did some research in the library, took my camera in to get cleaned and grabbed some sushi for lunch. That night, Anelle and I just stayed in and watched movies. We grabbed some delicious popcorn from Rundle and relaxed.
I hope you all enjoyed the previous post that Anelle wrote. I'm excited for her family to arrive...mostly, because I want to open up that bottle of wine and I want to check out wine country too! We have a booked tour in Barossa with them, which should be a great time. Anyhow, last weekend didn't amount to much. After the previous busy three day weekend, we just wanted to relax. On Friday night, we met up with a group of friends from my work and grabbed dinner, drinks and donuts at The Garden. This would be our last visit to The Garden as The Fringe festival would be coming to an end.

Alex and Belinda, are the wonderful colleagues and fellow winos that took me wine tasting. All of us had, had long nights and were mildly hung-over and tired but we rallied to seize the day! McLaren Vale is so close that they regularly go to just to grab a case or two of their favourite wines. Alex, actually had an order request from her Mum for 2 cases that day.
To fuel up and help our cause, our first stop was coffee and food in town. The town is tiny and boasts local produce, local cheese, and fresh made bread. Everything looked delicious and I wanted to buy so much but I restrained myself. It would be easy to grab a variety of things to take to with you to your favourite winery, and have a snack while wine tasting. I have to apologize for the crummy pictures from the get go for this post. I didn't have my Sony camera on me for most of the events as it was dirty and needed a good cleaning. All photos are from our iPhone. Enjoy!
Last weekend was filled from Friday to Monday. On Friday we met up with Dylan and Laura in CBD for a street party. One street in the CBD was closed and set up with a few bars, food stalls and a spot for a band to play. I really hope you're catching on to the theme in Adelaide over the last month. Festivals, pop-up bars, food stalls and people enjoying the outdoors of the city. This wasn't a festival. It was the city trying to promote a specific area in CBD. To us, it was an excuse to get out. Anelle and I walked from our apartment and when we finally found Dylan and Laura, we all decided to move on as we didn't really enjoy the vibe. It was too loud and crowded. Yup. We sound a bit old. But with age comes smarter life decisions…one hopes. We left and walked towards the river in order to meet Dylan's mate Dave for some drinks at Surrender. Not to be confused with the Surrender we love in Las Vegas, this Surrender was simply another outdoor venue connected to The Fringe Festival. This turned out to be a much smarter choice. It didn’t take long for us to realize we made a wise choice! Dave is one of the guys I often play basketball with and on this particular day we were celebrating his birthday. Surrender was themed as a new part of the world. We even got passport stamps on our wrist when we entered. It had a huge bar, an even larger BBQ area serving up delicious foods, and stations making cardboard hats and armor. Somehow, they made it fit into the theme and I didn’t hesitate to get on board. A bit strange but it was fun. Two weeks ago Anelle and I went to our friend Russell's home for a Viet roll making dinner party and to look at his wedding photos. If you don't remember, Russ was our Airbnb host when we first arrived in Adelaide. He's become a great friend and has looked after us while also introducing us to some other great people.
Over the holidays, Russ got married to Olga in Sri Lanka. It was a small civil wedding for the immediate family. They will be having a bigger traditional wedding for family and friends in Russia later this year. With Olga visiting from Russia we all got to hear some wedding stories and see some great photos of their wedding on a beach. I have to say that the best story involved Russ dropping his iPhone in the ocean and then getting into an argument with his Olga all while the wedding photographer captured it on film! We all couldn't stop laughing while Russ and Olga told us the story. The pictures can only can be described as paparazzi style photographing. They were happy jumping in the water, distraught after the phone fell in the water and then hiding behind some palms while they argued. It was priceless! Dinner was fun and tasty. I'm pretty sure I had to tap out after making and eating six or seven rolls. Anelle improved with each roll she made while mine looked more and more like messy mini burritos (enter Mexican joke here). On this night I decided to bring my camera as Anelle and I were keen to get pictures of everyone and prove that we have friends! Just like our friends at home, it's a great mix of people. Take a look. Hello everyone! Sorry we haven't updated this in a few weeks. We have kept pretty low key the last few weekends and recently lost internet at home so it makes things a bit less convenient. Anyways, this post covers our first experience with the opening of the Fringe Festival and checking out a new beach a few weeks ago. I'll have another post by the end of the week about this past weekend, which we spent with friends, checking out more Fringe activities and the start of the Art Festival. It's a fun time to be in Adelaide!
From the moment we got into Adelaide in October, everyone we had a conversation with told us about how great the Fringe Festival is. Well, usually the first thing they would say to us was, “Where are you guys from?” Once they found out we were from SD and OC, that was usually followed by “What are you guys doing here?!” Once we got past that part, the locals proceeded to tell us about wine country, bush lands, the beaches and without failure The Fringe Festival! “It’s the best time of year to be in Adelaide!” We later found out it’s also because it’s the time of year when 3 or 4 festivals happen in the span of a month. |
